News diary

March 21, 2019 – Who would have believed just a few weeks ago, that the world could practically grind to a halt. If you are stuck indoors, needing a boost, maybe you should pick up Encouragement DIGEST. In fact, I have just published Volume Two a week early. Pick up copies for yourself and your friends. The link to the order page is HERE

February 29, 2020 – It’s leap day today, a date that only comes round every four years! So, I decided to do something memorable. I re-worked the back cover of Volume 1 by justifying the text, then I spent the day compiling and creating Volume 2.  Although Vol 2 won’t go on sale until March 31st, it has now been uploaded to the printer. The cover features a really nice picture taken in Fernie BC.

February 27, 2020 – I’ve decided to move the blog posts away from the front page of the site, and onto their own dedicated “Blog post” page (HERE). The reason they were on the front page initially was because an internet course had suggested they’d get better ranking in  search engines that way. However, the more I looked at it, the less sense it made to place them there from a reader’s point of view. If someone comes to the site to learn about the book series (essentially what this website is for), they will want pertinent information to be the first thing they see. The blogs can still be accessed in the menu, in the sidebar on a desktop, and in the lower bar on a mobile device.

February 26, 2020 – Been very quiet on this site for a few weeks, and the reason is that I’ve been working on a major video project on behalf of a client who’s just launching a unique crowdfunding campaign. The video not only explains his campaign, but also allows me to mention Encouragement DIGEST while sharing the URL to this site. I will share the link to the video when the campaign launches.

February 13, 2020 – I am delighted to announce that the first ever copy of Encouragement DIGEST – Volume One arrived today. As I hold it in my hand, I am completely convinced that this re-branding from “Perfect Gift” is the correct move. The cover, the revised interior treatment, the smaller size, the publication schedule, the low price point… everything about this feels correct. So, here it is… The first copy!

February 12, 2020 – Published a new blog article today. I made use of all the knowledge gained in my recent studies in SEO optimization. A new approach for me, but the article is better for it. If you’ve not read it yet, check it out HERE. I’ve also added a “Blog archive” item to the menu to make it easier to access all blog posts when using a mobile device.

February 6, 2020 – Spent a lot of time today re-writing some of the pages on the website. I’ve also been adding some more pictures. If some of the images look a little small on your desktop monitor, it’s because I’m structuring and sizing them to be viewed on a mobile device. These days, people often view a site for the first time when they’re on their phones, so I am trying to cater to that whenever possible. Images are clickable if you want to see a larger version.

February 3, 2020 – After taking Sunday off, it’s back to the project today! Using screenshots of the original source files from which volume one of Encouragement DIGEST is printed, I’ve added some sample page images for site visitors to read. Later in the day, I received an email from the printer. My first two copies of volume one are on their way. I’ll take a picture for the site when they arrive!

February 1, 2020 – Well, the first LIKES came in today for the Facebook. Good… Looks better than an empty statistic! Thank you to those who so responded.  The morning was spent on a Skype video call with a professional webcaster in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. He loves this new approach, and we discussed several promotional opportunities that may become available for the Encouragement DIGEST brand. After a quick coffee-shop trip with my daughter, I got back to work and spent the rest of the day working on possible logo designs. At some stage, I’ll offer branded merchandise (coffee mugs, pens, shirts, etc), so a logo would be useful.

January 31, 2020 – Today was all about the website. I’m going through several online courses regarding Search Engine Optimization, and learning a ton of stuff in the process. I also went back into this site and added more pages, including the order page. Somewhere along the line I wrote the first blog explaining the transition from the old book to this new format, and then it was all announced on Facebook. I also invited my friends to LIKE the Encouragement DIGEST Facebook.

January 30, 2020 – I got a lot accomplished today. First task was to find my original files containing the vignettes from This Book is the Perfect Gift, and to select the 46 that will be featured in volume one of Encouragement DIGEST. Once selected, they were typeset using a larger font, and then a second page per vignette was added for journaling purposes.  The introduction was then written, the title and copyright pages created, and a closing note added to the last page. After a short coffee break, I designed the back cover. Then, after MANY visual reviews, spelling checks, etc, I went onto Lulu and went through the publication process. It’s done! The first volume is now available. A very long day, but I end it satisfied with the results.

January 29, 2020 – After many more hours at the computer today, reviewing literally hundreds of potential website themes, I finally decided on the look that seems to fit the project best. I applied it, and I like it. I also created a neat header for the site, displaying the five front covers I designed yesterday. I closed the day with an announcement on Facebook that “This Book is the Perfect Gift” has been retired and is now out of print.

January 28, 2020 – The cover design came together today. It took hours to find the harmony I was after, but once that was in place, everything flowed. So, I scoured hundreds of my original photos, trying out different ones in the cover design. Result? The front covers are now complete for the first five volumes. I came up with a slogan too, “The quarterly book series with wisdom you can live by”.  I’ll add that to the website as well.

January 27, 2020 – It has been another busy day today. I spent countless hours working on ideas for the front cover of the first volume. I want peaceful, harmonious colors, and a look I can truly brand. It’s getting there. I also spent at least six hours looking at different potential themes for this website. My eyes are tired, and so is my mind. Better call it a halt for the night.

January 26, 2020 – I spent many hours in deep reflection today, thinking about what the next move might be for my mission to encourage people. After sitting in the car, sipping coffee beside a frozen lake, the term “Encouragement DIGEST” came to me. Rushed home and started to research it. It’s wide open. I immediately secured the .com for it, and also purchased web-hosting on WordPress. Since the Facebook of same name was also available, I claimed that too.
